What is ABS System ?

So what is ABS in braking system ? What it contribution on the brake system ?

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking system used on aircraft and on land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. ABS operates by preventing the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining tractive contact with the road surface and allowing the driver to maintain more control over the vehicle.

ABS is an automatic system that uses the principles of threshold braking and cadence braking, methods which are once practiced by skilled riders. ABS generally offers advanced vehicle control and drops halting distances on dry and some smooth surfaces on loose gravel or snow-covered surfaces. ABS significantly increase braking distance,  improving steering control. Since ABS was introduced in production vehicles, It has become increasingly advanced and powerful. Depending on its unique capabilities and combinations, it is also known as electronic brake force distribution, traction control system, emergency brake assist, or electronic stability control (ESC). In the future, it may not simply prevent wheel lock but may also change the front-to-rear brake bias.

This that is the principle and overview about the system. What about the component ?

As shown, there are few component that involve in the ABS system such as :

  1. Toothed Sensor Ring
  2. Wiring from ECU
  3. Master Cylinder
  4. Wheel Speed Sensor
  5. ECU
  6. Hydraulic modulator
  7. Vacuum booster
  8. Hydraulic lines

So this component are cooperate each other to make the system working

What about the advantages ?

1. The ABS Shorter the stopping distances which is Anti-lock brakes reduce braking distances as the
wheel does not waste distance skidding.

2. The ABS also help when stopping on wet surface which is the ABS avoids wheel lock up and hence
allows surefooted braking on wet sleety surfaces.

3. The system also helping in Steer under braking which is the Anti lock brakes allow you to steer your car around objects if any as you still have grip on the wheels under intense braking.

So that is the overview of the ABS System which is in the car nowdays. Hope this information helping and give information to you that read this writing. Thank You.
